AWRO The Hustler
Turns the game around with a counterattack no one saw coming
What a Hustler is like
The Hustler isn't scared when the opponent attacks first. The messier the board gets, the more chances they find, flipping the game with a counterattack nobody expected. They win a lot of lost positions, but they also create crises of their own.
What shows up in their games
- Answers threats with bigger threats instead of defending
- Complicates the position further when worse
- Never misses the moment the opponent relaxes
Strengths
- Comeback ability
- Calm in complicated positions
- An eye for surprising moves
Weaknesses
- Can struggle to convert winning positions
- Neglects defense while hunting for counterplay
- Results swing a lot
Real moves by Hustler players
Picked from real games of Lichess players (names removed) that Stylish classified as AWRO when building its cutoffs. Routine recaptures and moves everyone plays were skipped in favor of moves that show the style most clearly.
37... Nxh3+
A move with high counterattack and complicating scores. A human at the same rating would play it here 44% of the time, a natural choice that still shows the style clearly. The engine labeled it a sound sacrifice.
50... Qxe7+
A move with high counterattack and tactical scores. A human at the same rating would play it here 28% of the time, a natural choice that still shows the style clearly.
34. Ne5+
This move dropped the expected score by 39 percentage points. The better move was Nxg5 (green arrow). It leans strongly tactical and initiative, the kind of mistake a Hustler makes when the habit goes too far.
How to improve
- When ahead, practice winning by simplifying
- Before counterattacking, check that the opponent's threat is really covered
- Review your comebacks and find out why you were worse in the first place
The opposite type
PSIE The ManagerSlowly squeezes until the opponent runs out of options. Every letter is reversed, so against this type your style either works best or not at all.
