AWIO The Pioneer
Opens the attack down a road no one has taken
What a Pioneer is like
The Pioneer prefers new roads to well-known ones. If giving up material buys the initiative, they don't hesitate, and they drag the game into positions the opponent has never seen. When the opponent misses the right defense, the game ends fast; against accurate defense, an overreaching sacrifice can simply stay a loss.
What shows up in their games
- Sacrifices and surprise moves come up often
- Deliberately complicates the position
- Never gives the opponent time to think
Strengths
- Unsettling opponents over the board
- Very dangerous against unprepared players
- Feel for attacking the king
Weaknesses
- Material losses stick against precise defense
- Plans tend to vanish once the attack is stopped
- Concentration drops in quiet endgames
Real moves by Pioneer players
Picked from real games of Lichess players (names removed) that Stylish classified as AWIO when building its cutoffs. Routine recaptures and moves everyone plays were skipped in favor of moves that show the style most clearly.
24... bxc4
A move with high initiative and tactical scores. A human at the same rating would play it here 11% of the time, so it is an unusual choice that is hard to find. The engine labeled it a trap.
14. Nxd5
A move with high counterattack and initiative scores. A human at the same rating would play it here 11% of the time, so it is an unusual choice that is hard to find. The engine labeled it a trap.
7. Nxf7
This move dropped the expected score by 38 percentage points. The better move was Nf3 (green arrow). It leans strongly initiative and tactical, the kind of mistake a Pioneer makes when the habit goes too far.
How to improve
- Before a sacrifice, ask once: what is left if it gets stopped?
- Practice the endgames that follow your attacks on purpose
- Learning to tell a gamble from a sound sacrifice will raise your level a lot
The opposite type
PSRE The GoalkeeperWears the opponent down with a defense that never breaks. Every letter is reversed, so against this type your style either works best or not at all.
Other Attackers
