PSIE The Manager
Slowly squeezes until the opponent runs out of options
What a Manager is like
The Manager plays as if managing the whole board. Holding the initiative, they shrink the range of the opponent's pieces one by one until there is nothing reasonable left to play. They win while taking almost no risk, make few mistakes, and rarely let an advantage slip.
What shows up in their games
- Restricts the opponent's pieces
- Grows small advantages safely
- Avoids risky moves
Strengths
- Converting advantages
- Prophylactic thinking
- Stable winning rate
Weaknesses
- Uncomfortable in wild positions
- Slow to commit when a comeback is needed
- Loses tempo when the opponent stirs things up
Real moves by Manager players
Picked from real games of Lichess players (names removed) that Stylish classified as PSIE when building its cutoffs. Routine recaptures and moves everyone plays were skipped in favor of moves that show the style most clearly.
28... Rd3
A move with high initiative and prophylactic scores. A human at the same rating would play it here 32% of the time, a natural choice that still shows the style clearly.
19... Re8
A move with high prophylactic and initiative scores. A human at the same rating would play it here 28% of the time, a natural choice that still shows the style clearly.
20... Nxd3+
This move dropped the expected score by 100 percentage points. The better move was Qg5+ (green arrow). It leans strongly initiative and simplifying, the kind of mistake a Manager makes when the habit goes too far.
How to improve
- Learn at least one way to shake things up when worse
- Prepare answers to sharp openings
- Review the difference between squeezing moves and hasty ones
