ASIE The Commander
Drives the enemy king back with relentless pressure
What a Commander is like
The Commander organizes the attack by moving every piece in order. Without reckless sacrifices they bring pieces into the attack one by one and build pressure until the opponent cracks. Clear plans and few mistakes make for steady wins, but unexpected counterattacks can catch them late.
What shows up in their games
- Values piece coordination
- Takes the initiative and builds pressure slowly
- Avoids reckless sacrifices
Strengths
- Well-planned attacks
- Piece placement
- Consistent results
Weaknesses
- Responding to unexpected counterattacks
- Switching plans when the pressure is blocked
- So standard it's easy to read
Real moves by Commander players
Picked from real games of Lichess players (names removed) that Stylish classified as ASIE when building its cutoffs. Routine recaptures and moves everyone plays were skipped in favor of moves that show the style most clearly.
23. Rxe8+
A move with high tactical and counterattack scores. A human at the same rating would play it here 35% of the time, a natural choice that still shows the style clearly.
20. Qxd8+
A move with high counterattack and tactical scores. A human at the same rating would play it here 42% of the time, a natural choice that still shows the style clearly.
15... Qxd1+
This move dropped the expected score by 98 percentage points. The better move was Re8+ (green arrow). It leans strongly tactical and aggressive, the kind of mistake a Commander makes when the habit goes too far.
How to improve
- Practice prophylactic moves that remove the opponent's counterplay first
- Learn endgame transitions for when the attack is stopped
- Now and then, disrupt the opponent's preparation with a surprise
